Like the previous year, India and China topped the list of top 10 countries that received most Express Entry invitations. While India received 42 percent of the 88,000 invitations, China received only nine percent. Countries that made to the top 10 list include Nigeria, Pakistan, the United Kingdom, the United States, Brazil, Iran, Republic of Ireland, Australia, and rest of the world. France and the Philippines didn’t carry their 2016 ranking into 2017 and made a place for Brazil and Iran. Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada also revealed some interesting insights of the Express Entry system in 2017. All top three occupations belonged to the information and technology sector, with most of the professionals being Indians. These occupations were information systems analyst and consultant, software engineer, and computer programmers and interactive media developers. Like 2017, Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta received the most number of permanent residents in 2017. Surprisingly, Atlantic provinces of Canada – Nova Scotia and New Brunswick saw an increase in permanent residents. Express Entry’s three economic programs and provincial nominee programs saw a 40 percent in permanent residents settling in Nova Scotia and more than 50 percent in New Brunswick.

Provincial statistics

Manitoba and Saskatchewan, which make up Canada’s prairie region, welcomed growth in admissions in 2017. In total, around 65,401 Express Entry applicants arrived in Canada with their family members as permanent residents in 2017. Ontario received the most number of immigrants, totaling at 36,087 permanent residents. British Columbia was second with 12,401 immigrants, Alberta took the third place with 8,687 immigrants, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia welcomed 2,869 and 2,269 immigrants respectively. Canada’s territories of Yukon and Nunavut received 23 and eight permanent residents each and took the last two spots in the list. Since Quebec has its own immigration system, those who went to that province weren’t counted in this review.
