Since August this year, the UAE has been running a visa amnesty program which allows immigrants in the country whose visas have expired to update their visa standing with the government and take either of the two options of going home or officially extending their visa without fear of any consequences. This amnesty scheme was equally extended to illegal immigrants and is still running to December 1, 2018. Since the amnesty became effective, more than 30,000 people have requested assistance in modifying their visa status in the UAE. The government of the Philippines, in particular, has since the three months of the amnesty, paid for the flight tickets of 2,417 of its citizens in the UAE to come back home. The Indian embassy and consulate in Dubai, on the other hand, has issued close to 1,800 short-term passports to its nationals enabling them to return home to apply for the permanent one. The Philippine embassy and consulate in Abu Dhabi and Dubai respectively, have given out temporary travel documents to 2,467 of its nationals whose passports were missing and wanted to travel back home. These offices have also renewed 3,140 passports for those who wish to apply for a six-month visa or who had gotten a job. Meanwhile, the UAE has given all those whose visas had expired until December 1 to resolve their visa status and go home without consequences.
