Motivated by the political situation in the US, a young married couple from America migrated to Canada using one of its permanent residency programs. Heather Vargas, 30, and her husband, Robin, 33, started planning to move to Canada as a joke. They remained true to their words. Packed up their bags, each with their cars, a big U-Haul truck, and their puppy, Kingsley. They started their 35-hour journey and reached Halifax at 6 am in the morning on December 31, 2017. As soon as they entered Canada, they were greeted by the polar vortex, a snowstorm. It really takes you to be very strong to move countries in the cold and frozen winter. But that didn’t stop them. After Donald Trump was elected as the 45th president of the US, they started joking about migrating to Canada. It felt surreal as every day passed by as the issue became more and more important. Following his win, over 200,000 visited Immigration Canada’s website, causing it to crash. This couple was one of them. They originally belong to Arkansas. The couple fell in love with Canada. The political situation did motivate them to take the step, but it wasn’t the only reason they moved. Family and friends thought they were mad but close ones supported them. Before choosing Halifax, the visited the city in Spring 2017. Since they are residents only, they can’t vote for Canada, but do choose to vote in American elections. Ikea and making new friends After learning that they will be moving to Halifax, they made online friends who were from there. After moving there, they’ve already met and gone to dinner together. They say that Ikea is very close to them, which is dangerous for their bank account but super fun to visit. They’ve already got their driving license, health cards, cars registered, and done with unpacking. We wish this couple, all the best for their life.
