The government of US expects to get more applications for the seasonal, non-agricultural - H2B Visa than the limit. The US Citizenship and Immigration Services said visa applications are selected through a lottery so that visas are issued relatively. During the 2016 financial year, employers from Houston applied for the most number of H2B visas followed by Austin. So what is the H2B visa? It is a nonimmigrant visa that allows foreign citizens to work temporarily in the US. To bring the worker in the US, the employer has to fill the Form I-129, Petition for Nonimmigrant Worker on his behalf. The employer must project that he doesn’t have enough workers to handle all operations of his company. When hired, these employees should decrease salaries of local American workers working in the company. It is given in the statement that since the employer’s need is temporary; the visa is seasonal and doesn’t lead to permanent residency like the H1B visa. The period can be extended to a maximum of one year if the employer can give proofs and applies for a valid temporary labor certification. Every year, the US government issues 66,000 H2B visas. Half of them work in the first half of the financial year starting from October 1 to March 31. The remaining 33,000 workers work from April 1 to September 30. In case, some spots were left vacant in the first half, and the number is carried over to the second half. However, remaining spots from the second half aren’t carried over to the next financial year.

Maximum for three years

If a person on H2B visa has stayed in the US for three years, should go back to his home country and can return to the US only after three months. The visa allows the spouse and unmarried children below 21 years of age to accompany the holder on an H4 visa, but they can’t work.
