All those planning to visit Samoa are in for an amazing surprise. The government of Samoa extends the temporary visa period by 30 days, increasing from 60 to 90 days. A minister of parliament of the Samoan government confirmed the news on December 19, 2017.
The bill was passed on an urgent basis by the government. Some independent MPs expressed their concern about people entering the country as immigrants and staying over their limit. Olo Fiti Va'ai, an independent minister of parliament, revealed that the government initially planned to decrease the limit from 60 to 30 days. He feels that the Samoan government should protect itself and its neighboring countries from becoming a safe haven for immigrants. He said this in reply of the increased inflow of African and Middle East immigrants into Europe.
Tuila'epa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi, Samoa’s Minister of Immigration and Prime Minister, says that no needs to worry about the decision. He said that the Pacific Transnational Crimes Unit would be monitoring the area for anything suspicious. PM Malielegaoi said that the government took a hasty decision to fulfill international requirements that allow Samoans to enter without a visa in a few European countries.
