Canada to Reject Refugees with Claims in Other Countries

A lot of asylum seekers are making their way through the Canada borders after the US have their claims as such the Canadian government has made a move to restrict such asylum seekers from entering the country. This crossings, especially through the US-Canada border, has become a controversial political issue. Canada blocks Asylum seekers from entering Canada On Monday evening, amendments with regards to the law concerning such restrictions were introduced in the 392-page Omnibus budget bill of the Liberal government. Through the new law, the Immigration officers will be permitted to restrict asylum seekers whose claims have already been made in countries like New Zealand, US, UK, and Australia. This is because these countries and Canada already have an immigration information-sharing agreement. With these, there will neither be any oral hearing for an asylum seeker nor an independent tribunal appeal. However, those denied can write a pre-removal risk attempt for submission, but there is only a 3 percent success rate as expressed by Lawyer Kevin Wiener.

Immigration officers should be fair

According to Kevin, if the government wants the Immigration officers to make decisions concerning this new rule, there must be an assurance that their decisions will be reasonable and fair. In 2018, about 20,000 asylum seekers crossed the US-Canada borders into Canada, and most of them have refugee claims in the States. Currently, over 200,000 asylum claims are pending, and it may take up to a 20 month to finish the hearings. Old stadiums and community centers have been renovated into shelters for refugees awaiting procession of claims. It has caused a controversial issue between the municipal, provincial and federal governments concerning the funding of the shelter for the refugees. A budget of over C$1billion has been pledged by the government this year, for funding of border services for the next 5 years.
