The Australian government has introduced three new visas for the assistance of regional Australia, as stated by the Migration Amendment Regulations 2019.
The Minister for Immigration Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs issued an explanatory statement which said “The amendments present a reviewed points system for the subclass 491 visa and also current General skilled migration visas. Applicants will be given points based on attributes that are associated with the candidate’s ability to make the utmost economic contribution as the main purpose of the skilled migration program is to make the most of the economic benefits of migration to Australia.”
New Visa Points Changes
The new changes made concerning the visa points include:
- Ten Points for the certain qualifications of STEM
- State or territory government’s nominees or applicants sponsored by a relative living in regional Australia gains fifteen points.
- Five points for visa applicants with a de facto partner or spouse who is fluent in English.
- Ten points for an applicant who has skilled de facto Partner or spouse.
- Applicants without a de facto partner or spouse gain ten points.
According to Ms. Chaman Preet, an expert in Melbourne-based Migration and Education, while those with spouses had an advantage over the singles in the previous visa point system, the changes made are beneficial to both the singles and those with skilled spouses.
These amendments of visa points came as per recommended by the productivity commission. According to the commission 2016 report, it recommended that points should be awarded secondary applicants as a way of acknowledging their inputs to the country’s economic growth since a lot of them (over 50%) are Australia’s permanent skilled workers
It is also believed by experts that skilled applicants
with proficiency in English will benefit most from the changes.
According to Ms. Preet, applicants without partners and those with skilled partners will receive preferential treatment over those applicants without skilled partners or fluency in English.
This new visa points system is set to resume on November 16th, 2019.
